Key Stage 1 - Plum (Year 1) 2018 - 2019

Mr Dunning

Miss Nicholls

Miss Bradley

Welcome to Plum class!

Myself, Mrs Bradley and Mrs Simon-Bryne would like to welcome everyone back and hope you all have had a fantastic Half Term! We're really looking forward to seeing everyone and excited about getting on with some very exciting activities this term!

Starting this term we have an excitng opportunity for the children to enjoy Wtwww (Whatever the Weather Woodland Wonder). THIS WILL TAKE PLACE EVERY OTHER MONDAY AFTERNOON SO PLEASE EQUIP YOUR CHILD WITH WATERPROOFS!

This half term, Plum class will be studying the text of 'A Walk in London' by Salvatore Rubbino.London – the perfect place for a girl and her mother to spend the day! Follow them as they board the classic red bus and begin a whirlwind tour of some of London’s most iconic landmarks. Try to climb the awe-inspiring lions at Trafalgar Square, take in the ritualistic Changing of the Guard, experience the whispering gallery at St Paul’s and – if you’re lucky – you may even spot the Queen! In this paean to Britain's bright and bustling capital city, Salvatore Rubbino's fresh, lively paintings and breezy text capture the delight of a young visitor experiencing the wonders of London first-hand. And of course, what’s London without a little rain? This fantastic book is going to allow the children to enhance their skills in sequencing sentences to form short narratives and understand how words can combine to make sentences!

Our Science topic this term is Materials! This is a very exciting topic which will allow children to identify and name a variety of everyday materials, including wood, plastic, glass, metal, water, and rock. They will also compare and group together a variety of everyday materials on the basis of their simple physical properties.

P.E.:

Mondays and Tuesdays are now our set days for P.E.! (As our timetable can change at any moment, we ask if you can make sure your child has a P.E. kit in school at all times!) During this half term, the children will be participating in activities which will ask them to follow instructions through the use of activities such as dance. These lessons will be carried out both inide and outside of the school (weather dependant) so please prepare your child for both circumstances! The children will also be participating in Dance lessons on a Tuesday morning. This is a fabulous new opportunity for the children to gain new skill sets.

Reading:
Please read your child's school reading book with them each night and update your child's Reading Record.
Your child will need to bring in their reading book and Reading Record to school each day. We suggest that your child reads their book at least twice so they can develop fluency with their reading and when recognising new words. Rewards such as Dojos and Golden nuggets will be given to your child if they read at home! (Rewards will also be given to children if they complete any home learning activities!) In plum class, we complete daily guided reading activities which support your child's ability to read and learn new words and improve their comprehension skills. As well as completing guided reading, your child will also read with one of us in the morning! By doing this we can see who has been reading at home and change books where necessary.

Phonics and Spelling
Each day, your child will take part in fun phonics sessions. To help support their learning and progress at home, click the Phonics Games button below. Spellings are handed out every Monday and your child will be tested every Friday. In plum class, we follow the 'Look, cover, write, check' formula as we believe that this is one of the best ways for your child to learn their spellings. Please can you make every effort to support your child with learning their spellings! Not only will this aid their learning, this will also allow them to earn rewards for completeing home learning activities! Spellings will be practised in school once a week to help the children.
